Preparations of the Land (May 2010)

IMG_3952.JPG

We purchased 3 rai of land in San Kamphaeng, Chiang Mai. Land was a rice field, about 70cm below the main road level. Soil infill is being done to bring the land above road level.

Plan is to build a 250 square metre single floor house, double car garage, observatory, 2.5 metre high perimeter fence, and some nice landscaping. We also want to have a small vege garden, and lots of fruit trees, just for fun.

The house design is based on several homes in Melbourne, Australia. The house includes 3 bedrooms, 2 bathrooms, a study room, an open plan kitchen/family room/meals area, and a laundry room. It also includes an outdoor alfresco style area for eating, BBQ, relaxing, and some other activities.

The house is being built with local sourced labor, and we are doing the planning, purchasing and project management ourselves. Work started on 7th May 2010.

Main House - Roof Metal

IMG_1280.JPG

Work on the roof metal began on 27 July 2010 with the delivery of metal beams.
This was followed by painting of red oxide, and installation.

We first thought it was finished on 31 August, but when the roof tile guy came and
tried to bounce, the roof moved quite a bit.

Repairs then began to first reinforce the roof in certain sections. The repairs lasted about
2 weeks as the roof metal structure was converted into a truss system. The roof metal
was completed on 26 September, and tile installation resumed.

Main House - Roof Tiles

IMG_1430.JPG

Roof tiles arrived in 2 trucks on 2 August.

Installation was delayed by 2 weeks once the roof metal started to sag, due to an
improperly designed roof using no trusses.

Installation was restarted on 25 September, and completed on 28 September.

Observatory

IMG_4510.JPG

An observatory will be built to house a telescope. A solid concrete pier is built, isolated form the floor of the observatory, to dampen vibrations in order to do astro-photography. The telescope will be purchased from the US.

The observatory will have a movable room, and an sealed control room. The size of the building is 6 metre x 3 metre. The observatory will be located in San Kamphaeng, about 18 km from Chiang Mai. Light pollution is fairly low, and the land was primarily chosen for this factor.

Fence

We decided to go with concrete posts and a bamboo fence. The land needs 100 posts and 100 of 3 m bamboo fence sides. Total cost of the posts and bamboo is 48,000 baht.

The (incompetent?) roof metal guy thinks about how to jack up the roofMaybe incompetent is too strong a word - but he was quick to assign blame to poor quality metal, bad architect, bad engineer, CPAC tiles too heavy, roof too big, etc - everyone except himself.Max&Bee-in-CM
