Re: PM's?
I'm not sure how serious the abuse of the system was, but taking it down completely seems a bit drastic. I'm sure other forums have similar problems, however the seem to manage. Sorry to seem negative, it's just that PMs are an important component of forums. Is there anyway to access old messages, h...

Re: GETTING MARRIED - why bother?
The lawyer who did the usufruct told me the bank wouldn't lease against it. The previous owner told us (after the sale) that the bank had approved a building loan for more than the land value. As we're married assets bought are 50 - 50, so if we paid of a loan together it would be a very fair arrang...

Re: GETTING MARRIED - why bother?
Regarding marriage and social norms, I really think it's very similar to the West now. If two ppl want to live together, ppl may (or may not) decide to gossip, that's what they do in small towns. The fact that you're a farang is a much more juicier bit of chatter than not having a ceremony. Just wan...

Re: GETTING MARRIED - why bother?
Another thing, spouses are entitled to 50% of assets bought while legally married. Even though farang may not be allowed to own land, they can force a sale through the courts. Sure it sounds neither fun nor easy, but it has been done.

Re: GETTING MARRIED - why bother?
Also, all of these usufructs and wills and leases depend on 'the spirit' of the agreements and arrangements. If you have a little wife or gf that is a drain on you, then chances are you are wasting your time and money on various things like this. If she is a loving and normal wife, then the 'spirit...

Re: Building and Business Permits
This is an older thread but anyone picking it up here will be pleased to know that; Nevertheless, even a small fruit and vegetable stall on the land needs a business licence in our village. I will report on the process when we are ready to open the bubgalows for trade. -J I'm curious about this. We...

Re: GETTING MARRIED - why bother?
Thaifly, words of wisdom as always. To be honest if I had of done it myself it would have cost more. Maybe I could have found some else to do it and save a few grand, but looking at the bigger picture, it's peanuts. As for the mud house, just throwing around some ideas...but that's for another threa...

Re: GETTING MARRIED - why bother?
Another good informative thread, although I have a comment on one line; "living in sin is very much frowned upon and is living in sin is very much frowned upon and is not acceptable at all in the more respected levels of the social order. From my experience living together is accepted and commo...

Re: Getting full control of land through USUFRUCT
^ Although it looks like I would have been better doing things in the opposite order. Not to worry. A large portion of the funds are from our savings and the rest is borrowed and being paid back by the both of us. My wife considers the land as ours, not hers or mine. I think this is very important, ...

Re: Getting full control of land through USUFRUCT
Why bother getting officially married when a Buddhist ceremony is all that is required to comply with local mores? If a married couple has a combined income of B40,000 per month they can apply for a one year visa. We have a business together and to obtaining the WP is easy but for the one year busi...

Re: Getting full control of land through USUFRUCT
Good thread, I have a usufruct on our land, the main reason is in case of my wife's death. A large portion of the money to buy the land came from our combined savings from working in our own business. We've been together 7 yrs, but only got married a little over 1yr ago as it made the WP and 1yr vis...
