Day 5Had some unusual rain in Isaan for 2 days so the time was spent painting the rest of the steel in the shed, getting a truck load of dirt delivered, and bending more braces.
The ground beams are poured and the roof steel half finished. I still never fathomed out why they have to use a platform to load the mixer. Notice the plastic bags round my expensive steel scaffolding to protect it from cement (a lesson learned from previous jobs).1 commentsjazzman

Ground beam 'formwork'As mentioned, this is a low budget Thai style construction. We will be pouring the ground-beam concrete directly into the trenches in the earth, when the trenches have been lined with plastic sheeting. This will also fill the rest of the footing holes to lock everything in place.
The ground beams a re 20 x 20 with four runs of RB9 and RB6 braces at 20 cm.jazzman

Day 2 MaterialsOrganising the materials, painting the steel with red oxide, straightening the rebar and digging the first couple of holes.
The sand cost 280 baht/cu, the gravel 380 baht/cu, and the TPI cement 95 baht per 50 kg bag. The smooth 9 mm rebar (RB9) cost 38 baht per 10 m length.
The pre cast reinforced columns 15 x 15cmx 2.50 m columns cost 275 baht each. They come with a cut-out on the top with a hole for bolting a steel or wooden ring-beam.jazzman

Day 1. Setting upThe first day was spent setting up the shed, the site electrics and lighting, organising the tools, the cement mixer, and the portable scaffolding, clearing the plot and marking out with pegs and orange string. We bought the cement mixer a couple of years ago second-hand for 5,000 baht. In it, we use the spare 3 Kw motor from the rice-mill. It's reasonably transportable on the back of a pick-up.jazzman

Day 3. Pre cast columnsExcept for one rough sketch, there are no drawings of any kind for this project. The day was spent digging out the rest of the footings, laying concrete and the the rebar. By the end of the day eight of the twelve columns had been erected. There will be four hotel rooms, and the extension (not visible), will be a decorative steel covered patio for the pool with WC & shower, and laundry room for the motel.

'Breezeblock'itblock: ?¸?¸´?¸?¸š?¸??¹‡?¸?¸„, the finished item. If the holes a re left empty, the brick has excellent insulting properties approaching those of a cavity wall. For a stronger construction, the holes can be filled with cement and rebar can be fed trough them or up the grooves in the ends.
Current 2009 price: 3.50 baht. delivery is always free for a house load within a radius of about 50 Km from your plot.jazzman

Louvered window (kitchen).This 2 x 1 m louvered window is constructed of the same heavy duty aluminium used for all the windows and exterior sliding and hinged doors. We insisted on quality winder mechanisms. The glass is 6mm one-way, reflective, black UV. It includes sliding fly screens. Can't say the cost - it was offered as a free bonus by our supplier, guess it's worth about 8,000 baht; just because we are farangs, not everything of quality has to be expensive or made by a large company in a big city.jazzman

Ceiling panel with recessed lightSheetrock ceilings with fancy recesses are all the rage, but we opted for suspended 60 x 60 cm panels. They have the advantages that they permit immediate access to any part of the roof space, and lighting arrangements and ceiling fans can be added to or changed around at will. It also breathes, allowing warm air to convect upwards and away into the attic. They come in with hundreds of different colours and patterns, are extremely cheap, and if you get fed up with them, you just change them !jazzman

Continental European 'Schuko' socket from BTicinoUnfortunately, only one socket module will fit into a an escutcheo/backplate assembly. Nevertheless, a very safe solution.jazzman

Continental European 'Schuko' plug.Many appliances such as toasters, blenders, food mixers, electric kettles, microwave ovens etc., now come in Thailand with this kind of plug moulded onto the mains cord.jazzman
