Proper SquaringThe 3,4,5 is a redundant check to the diagonal check, but it can come in handy in certain situations where the diagonals cannot be easily accessed. I would note that most houses in Thailand are not 'square' because basic checks like these are not commonly done.dozerSep 27, 2011

Diagonal Checks for Column PlacementThe correct placement of columns is important to the overall project to ensure that the wall angles are as they should be and the house is as designed. Often the only tool used is an external measure + the use of a small square. This shows one additional check, taken from the 3 4 5 triangle rule. If you measure 3 meters along one axis and 4 meters along another axis the diagonal should be 5 meters (or in this case 6, 8 and 10). This is done in addition to measuring the diagonals for equality.dozerSep 27, 2011

Steel StrengthThe steel distributors in general use a system for strength specification which is meaningless structural engineers. The standard strength specification as indicated here is stamped on the rebar and conforms to an SDxx format. This SD30 used here means that it would require a 30 kg. weight to permanently deform a 1 mm strand of this steel. dozerSep 27, 2011

Bad Cement - IndicationsThis is an example of stale cement. Cement has a shelf life of about 2 months and after that it becomes non powdery and sticks together much like this large size clump indicates. Workers will often try to use this cement with out saying anything but it is low quality and can be returned if it came from the store this way. dozerSep 27, 2011
