battens.jpg
roof tile battensThese galvanised steel W-section battens will take special self-tapping 'Profast' screws straight through from the tiles. Other 'Profast' self-tapping screws are used to screw them to the rafters. They can tap into the 3.3 mild steel obviating any predrilling. These battens have the huge advantage that laying the tiles is a one-man operation. Thais usually anchor their tiles by passing copper wire through the screw hole with a man underneath to do the tying.jazzman
Granite_top.jpg
Kitchen topNatural granite slabs for the kitchen worktops. This cost about 1,500 per sq.m. It has to be installed by the supplier who cuts out the holes for the hob and sink, and grinds and polishes the edges on site.
Suppliers charge as much again for this service plus petrol (gasline) costs if you are situated out of town.
This granite may seem expensive to some, but it is still much cheaper than that awful formica chipboard kitchen top stuff they use in Europe.

kitchen_base.jpg
Kitchen base units.Frustrated at not being able to get nice wooden base units carpentered locally, we finally bought these nice cupboard fronts and a matching 3-drawer unit in a sale at Global House. Sale? Hmm... still not cheap - this is 22,000 baht's worth of wood !
Nevertheless, factory made and very nicely finished and polished.

Holes_in_base.jpg
Holes cut in the brick base for the cupboards. The light shining through is a special cupboard for the gas tank. There is a steel door on the outside. You drive up with you car with a new gas tank and push it in through from outside. Saves carrying the heavy tank all the way round the back to the kitchen.
Lacking any better ideas, the fronts were tiled with leftovers from one of the bathrooms.

base_units_2.jpg
?ΒΈ?Base Unit DoorsWe couldn't find a local carpenter to make these with a reasonable finninsh so we had to by factory made ones from Global House. These were the cheapest decent ones and together cost 22,000 baht. (one is a unit with three drawers, the others are just cupboard fronts). The result is a compromise between what we originally wanted and what our Thai workers could achieve. Granito floor will be laid. The blue pipe sticking up is for the floor drain.
