Speaker wire

Postby Psychic » Mon Dec 28, 2015 5:38 pm

Hey guys,
I just bought myself a shiny new surround system.
Actually, its a slightly dusty used system.
I'd like to run the surround wiring up the wall, across the roof space and then back down the wall.
To hide the wires I was thinking I'd chase a groove in the walls.
Coming out of the receiver I could run all 4 wires inside electrical conduit.
But where the individual speaker wires come down do I need to have some kind of protective coating or can you render right over RCA speaker cabme?
Thanks for any advice

I would be inclined to bring the wire out thru' the render inside short piece of plastic tube - but why not extend your conduit idea on the down leg from the roof space to the speakers.

Just trying to avoid unnecessary cutting. 4 conduit lines down is not huge but I could cut a small groove with an angle grinder if I just need enough for the speaker cable.
I need to get my electrical guy anyway to get the line pulled across...I'll talk to him about it.
I just wasn't sure if bare speaker cable was OK under render.

Shouldn't really pose any problem, but I would opt for heavy duty cable.

Lamp cord is the best for speaker wiring

There have been many tests by professional audiophiles and they all pretty much come to the conclusion that there in no measurable difference between plain old lamp cord and expensive "speaker cables" such as Monster or other brands

see this article for a discussion:

Thanks for that.
You learn something new every day.
I always suspected that the serious money on high end wire was a scam. Didn't know you could use plain old lamp wire.
Just bought 40 meters of wire from China for around 1000 B for the outside run. So not too bad but if I put speakers on the other side out the house I'll just grab some 14 or 16 gauge wire at the local shop.
